The piece & its details
A violet Banarasi katan silk sari with the full body covered in a flowing gold zari jaal of vines, flowers and figurative detail. The violet ground appears between the gold rather than sitting plainly beneath it, which gives the sari its depth.
The border keeps the frame dense and formal, while the pallu moves into large medallion forms filled with the same rich woven work. For evening weddings, receptions and occasions where a Banarasi should feel full, serious and unmistakably ceremonial.
