The piece & its details
A deep violet mulberry silk Banarasi carrying one of the most lyrical motifs in the Banaras repertoire — clusters of birds in flight, scattered freely across the body in gold and silver-toned zari. Each buta shows a loose formation mid-air, some climbing, some banking — alive in a way that floral butis rarely are.
The border is a full shift in mood: bottle green with an unbroken procession of deer, birds and flowering trees in gold-toned zari, the kind of shikargah design that takes weeks to weave. The pallu carries it further — a diamond lattice ground framed by the same forest border on all four sides, with green and purple silk tassels at the edge.
Two completely different worlds on one sari, and they make sense together. For weddings, receptions and anyone who wants a Banarasi that people will actually ask about.
